Diabetes cases in the Philippines are
increasing at alarming rate. Health experts warned that there will be some 6.16
million diabetic Filipinos by 2030. In 2010, there were 3.4 million diabetes
cases in the country, representing a prevalence rate of 7.7 percent.
Citing data from the World Health
Organization and International Diabetes Foundation, by 2030, the prevalence
rate is projected to rise to 8.9 percent.
This will be a big problem that we Filipinos
will encounter in 2030. We already have a big problem at present what more
about 16 years from now? Our hands will be full in tackling this problem.
A Serious Problem Worldwide
Diabetes is now a growing global epidemic. The
numbers are increasing. In 2011 there were 360 million diabetics worldwide. We
will have more than 550 million by 2030.
According to a fact sheet, diabetes
is “a serious, lifelong disease and is a disorder of metabolism — the way our
body uses the food we eat for growth and energy.” This condition is commonly
known as having high glucose or sweetness in the blood.
Diabetes, however, is associated
with long-term complications like blindness, heart and blood vessel disease,
kidney failure, amputation of limbs, nerve damage, and stroke.
Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90
percent of all cases in the Philippines. Type 2 which is associated with
lifestyle and gestational diabetes, a condition that affects pregnant women
during pregnancy.
To curb the trend and to minimize
the ill effects of diabetes, everyone must “work on prevention and proper
management of cases.”
